SYMMATRIX and A*STAR™Data Storage Institute to Launch a Network Storage Product PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 20 June 2006
Symmatrix Pte Ltd (SYMMATRIX) and Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research's (A*STAR) Data Storage Institute (DSI) today announced its collaboration to launch a new product based on DSI’s Internet SCSI (iSCSI) Target Software Module.

Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL) facilitated the technology transfer between SYMMATRIX and DSI through a license agreement, granting commercialization rights to market the iSCSI Network Storage products. The new product will be market ready and available for customer testing in three months’ time.

iSCSI is an official standard ratified on 11 February 2003 by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) that allows the use of the SCSI protocol over TCP/IP networks. This protocol allows users to connect and use SCSI or SCSI-based devices such as IDE, USB, and Fibre Channel over a network, as if they were directly and locally attached.

DSI’s iSCSI Target Software Module is able to interface with the third party iSCSI Initiators and provides access to the standard storage stack such as the SCSI block device. An iSCSI Target module is required to establish itself as a storage server in order to accept connections from remote iSCSI Initiators.

“The launch of the new product by Symmatrix reflects the successful transfer of technology from lab research to actual usage and a customer,” said Dr Neo Siak Peng, ETPL’s Vice President of Commercialisation/Licensing. “Exploit Technologies looks forward to Symmatrix’s success and stands by ready to assist in any way we can.”

“We are very excited to witness another of our proprietary technologies realizing commercialization,” said Prof Chong Tow Chong, Executive Director of DSI. “This collaboration not only showcases DSI’s compelling research capabilities in network storage but also validates our commitment towards exploiting new data storage innovations for the benefit of Singapore’s economy.” SYMMATRIX plans to promote Storage Area Networks (SAN) and IP Storage through this strategic licensing of DSI’s iSCSI technology and launch a new Network Storage product line under the SYMMATRIX™ brand name.

“The close collaboration with DSI will greatly enhance SYMMATRIX capability in storage technology and help us shorten tremendously our time frame to launch our own storage product line. This collaboration also shows DSI commitment to help local technological companies. The combined strengths of SYMMATRIX’s IT Solutions & Services and DSI’s R&D human capital and infrastructure will benefit data storage customers, be it large, medium or small entities,” said Richie Tjong, Managing Director of Symmatrix Pte Ltd.

The license agreement marks SYMMATRIX’s strategic plans to increase market share of data storage products in Singapore and the region. This is also in line with DSI’s vision to assist local companies to enhance their competitive edge via a transfer of technologies and to accelerate SAN technology awareness and adoption locally.

SYMMATRIX will exhibit the state-of-the-art prototype at CommunicAsia 2006 from 20 to 23 June 2006 at Singapore Expo, Hall 3, Booth 3C3-05. A*STAR’s latest cutting-edge technologies will also be exhibited at the event in Hall 6, Booth 6E5-01.
