Price:  Call for Pricing

The world's first external SFF (2.5-inch disk drive) RAID subsystem. The B12F features unprecedented space efficiency by providing all advanced RAID functions in a 1U enclosure. Using 2.5-inch disk drives allows twice the number of spindles within the same footprint, and hence is ideal for I/O-intensive applications. The B12F supports the capacity expansion with 3 or 4 JBOD enclosures and the flexibility of attaching both SAS or SATA-II disk drives.

Introducing 2.5-inch Small Form Factor Disk Drives:

Higher Reliability and Better Performance:

2.5-inch SAS disk drives are designed for environment requiring higher reliability (with an outstanding 1.7 million hours MTBF) and higher I/O density. The benefits of 2.5" disk drives are obvious:

  • 70% smaller: Think about the estimated $1000 cost per square foot in an average data center. Now you can install 2.5 times of hard drives in the same data center footprint.
  • Consumes 40% less power: In addition to cost reduction, less power means a cooler enclosure, and therefore a higher overall reliability.
  • Higher MTBF: High-end 15,000RPM 2.5-inch SAS drives feature a 1.6 million hour MTBF, which is 15 percent higher than the 1.4 million hour by 3.5-inch disk drives.

2.5-inch Drives Are Simply Smaller:

Infortrend is the first to introduce 2.5" disk drives in external RAID enclosures. Using 2.5" drives allow you to implement more spindles in less than half of rackmount space than using the 3.5" counterparts. More spindles mean higher IOPS performance.

Lower Total Cost of Ownership:

Compact in Size:

SFF 2.5-inch disk drives are simply smaller than their 3.5-inch counterparts. That means more disk drives can be integrated in the disk array enclosures. For example, an Infortrend’s B12S/B12F 1U enclosure houses 12 2.5-inch SAS disk drives while the same number of 3.5-inch disk drives requires a 2U-profile enclosure. This density edge dramatically improves space utilization efficiency.

Power Consumption and Heat Generation:

SFF 2.5-inch disk drives consume 45% less power than their 3.5-inch counterparts. They run cooler with reduced airflow requirements, which also decrease the chance of encountering thermal issues and the cost on providing airflow ventilation.

Shock Tolerance:

Shorter and stiffer actuator, smaller discs, and a compact motor increase its tolerance to shock and vibration, and hence the disk array can operate with higher reliability.

Less Vibration When Spinning:

Spinning multiple drives in a RAID enclosure can introduce interference from the seek acceleration by one drive seeking data to another that is writing. The transmitted vibration can cause retries and hence the overall array performance can be affected. In a high-transaction rate and random-access environment with intensive seek operations, the potential performance loss can be mended by 2.5-inch disk drives. 2.5-inch drives do not generate sufficient vibration during seeks to degrade the overall performance.

Full-featured RAID in a Compact 1U Chassis:

The B12F RAID enclosure is designed with all the sophisticated high availability features including redundant RAID controllers, a passive backplane, cross-controller 'sync. cache' channels, redundant cooling and power supply modules. Highest performance and spindle density is achieved within the compact design which previously requires 2U or more rack space.

Thanks to the low vibration and reduced airflow requirements of 2.5-inch drives, the B12F runs with higher reliability. As a reminder, the B12F does not compromise on its advanced RAID functionality because of its compact size. The B12F supports RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, multi-level logical volumes, and all the renowned firmware functionality as other EonStor series models.

Software Features:

EonPath: The EonPath drivers coordinates with Microsoft MPIO, runs on Solaris and Linux platforms, and provides fault tolerance for multiple data paths and load-balancing algorithms. The EonPath also enables TPGS (Target Port Group Service) for optimizing I/Os through the optimal paths.

Snapshot: Snapshot enables point-in-time backup with high fidelity and minimal impact to ongoing applications. More significant is that the snapshot operation is processed by RAID hardware without load on host CPUs. Snapshot also features dedicated snapshot volumes, automated snapshot scheduler, and comprehensive disk space control.

SANWatch: SANWatch provides all functions necessary to discover, configure, administer, and monitor Infortrend's RAID arrays; be they remote or many. The SANWatch also provides management interfaces for EonPath and Snapshot functions, so that all data protection and high availability features can be accessed through one interface.

Scalability: Expansion over SAS Wide Links:

Similar to Fibre Channel expansion loops, SAS expander technologies also enable the ease of connections when the need arises for more capacity. All you have to do is to attach the cables and use a flatblade screwdriver to select an enclosure ID by a rotary switch. The SAS WWN addresses will be automatically applied to all the disk drives.

A single-controller RAID can attach to 4 expansion enclosures (60 HDD) via SAS wide links.

A redundant-controller RAID can attach to 3 expansion enclosures. Although the maximum no. of disk drives is reduced to 48, yet fault-tolerant links can be strung between RAID and JBOD enclosures.

Host Links:

Each B12F RAID controller comes with 2 4Gbps Fibre channels for point-to-point or switched connections.

Tiered Storage Application:

Via SAS multi-lane links over multiple enclosures, the large capacity SATA-II disk drives can be easily implemented for configurations that run on reliable SAS drives and a bulky pool of storage pool made of SATA-II disk drives.

Reliable 2.5" SAS drives can be used for critical and I/O-intensive access, while 3.5" SATA drives can be used for less-critical data, archive, or D2D backup purposes.

Flexibility with Both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch Hard Disk Drives:

In addition to the B12S-J1000 1U enclosures, the B12F RAID series also supports a variety of expansion enclosures in 2U or 3U profiles. For the concern with price/performance allocation, we support SATA-II drives in the 2U and 3U drive enclosures.
